UNITED SUFFER SECOND DEFEAT IN THREE

Manchester United have suffered a second defeat in three games in all competitions after they were beaten at home by Spanish La Liga champions Atletico Madrid as they crashed out of the Champions League at the round of 16 stage. The Red Devils were beaten 1-0 at home by their Spanish opponents to add to the defeat suffered at the hands of Manchester City in the Premier League Manchester Derby over the last three matches in all competitions.

The Ralf Rangnick-led Manchester United side had done a good job at the end of their last 16 first leg clash with Atletico Madrid by holding their hosts to a 1-1 draw at the new Wanda Metropolitano Stadium thanks to the late goal from young Swedish winger Anthony Elanga. Atletico Madrid had taken an early lead through Joao Felix and they had chances to extend that lead, but they didn’t take it before Elanga pounced on a long pass from Portuguese playmaker Bruno Fernandes to score the United equaliser.

The goal from Elanga placed Manchester United in a fantastic position to secure a quarterfinal berth at the end of the second leg. In the end, they lost the second leg thereby losing the tie.
Manchester United didn't make their home advantage count in the second leg after they were beaten thanks to the only goal of the game from Brazilian fullback Renan Lodi. The Brazil senior national team star scored the only goal of the game with four first half minutes left to play. Atletico Madrid held on for the rest of the first half and the whole of the second half to secure a 2-1 aggregate win and a place in the quarterfinals.
Atletico Madrid will be in the Champions League quarterfinal draw later this week alongside teams like Manchester City, Real Madrid and Benfica. Liverpool and Bayern Munich would also be in the draw.
