EDERSON TO CHOOSE UNITED

Manchester United are reportedly leading the race to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with a bold attempt to snatch the Brazilian from under the noses of rivals Manchester City this summer.

While still hopeful of ending a disappointing season on a high with Europa League success, United are already laying the groundwork for a significant summer overhaul. New manager Ruben Amorim is expected to usher in a new era at Old Trafford, with sweeping changes planned as he shapes the squad in his own image.

Central to this transformation will be moving on a number of underperforming or surplus players. The likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Antony are among those expected to depart, generating crucial funds that will allow Amorim to pursue key targets without breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSRs).

One name that features prominently on United’s shortlist is Ederson. According to Italian outlet Quotidiano Sportivo, the Red Devils have emerged as frontrunners for the 25-year-old’s signature. The report claims Atalanta would consider selling the midfielder for a fee in the region of €60 million — a figure that, while substantial, would be viewed as a long-term investment in stabilizing United’s midfield.

Ederson has long been admired across Europe, with both Manchester City and Liverpool previously expressing interest — particularly during the recent winter transfer window. However, United’s intent to act decisively could now give them the upper hand.

Ruben Amorim is reportedly a huge admirer of the Brazilian international, having faced him on four occasions during his time at Sporting Lisbon. That familiarity may now work in United’s favour, especially as Amorim looks to bring in players who can seamlessly adapt to his tactical vision. Ederson, who has impressed as a dynamic presence in defensive midfield, is seen as an ideal candidate to eventually succeed Casemiro, whose form and fitness have declined significantly this season.

Another factor in United’s favour could be their recent dealings with Atalanta. The two clubs have developed a good working relationship in recent years, with United previously securing the signings of Amad Diallo and Rasmus Højlund from the Bergamo-based side. That goodwill could prove vital in negotiations, especially if other top clubs reignite their interest.

Nevertheless, United’s ability to secure Ederson may depend heavily on whether they qualify for the Champions League next season. Atalanta are currently on course for a top-four finish in Serie A, and unless United can match that level — most likely by winning the Europa League — convincing Ederson to swap Champions League football for a rebuilding project at Old Trafford could prove a tough sell.

Still, United’s determination to land the midfielder speaks volumes about the direction the club hopes to take under Amorim. It signals a return to prioritizing players who fit a cohesive style of play, rather than marquee names who don’t always suit the system. Ederson’s tactical intelligence, work rate, and composure on the ball have made him a standout performer in Italy this season, and he could provide the kind of midfield balance United have lacked since their peak under Sir Alex Ferguson.

As things stand, Manchester United are positioning themselves for a busy and potentially transformative summer. With Ederson identified as a cornerstone of the rebuild, all eyes will be on Old Trafford to see whether the club can back their ambitions with action — and whether they can beat their closest rivals to one of Europe’s most coveted midfielders.
