Jose Mourinho Stresses The Need For More Quality In Summer Rebuild

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that he would be eyeing for signings who can earn more quality to the squad next season. The Red Devils are set for their best-ever league finish since the Alex Ferguson era but they have still been far off from competing with Manchester City for the Premier League title.

As such, Mourinho is keen on adding more quality to his ranks during the summer after admitting that he has tried to get the best out of the current set of players, he told reporters: “How many points separate us from Manchester City?. Not two, three or four. A lot of points.Some of the people we have, they have to be more consistent in their performance and we need more quality. I trust some more than others that can bridge that gap. That's normal. I know the players. I worked with the players for a couple of years, so I know them better than anyone.”

United are expected to part ways with midfielder Michael Carrick upon his retirement during the summer and this is widely expected to intensify their search for a replacement. Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has been earmarked in recent weeks but it would be interesting to see whether United are willing to splash a club-record sum for the Serbia international.

Aside from the midfield, the full-backs positions also remain a concern for next season with both Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young having entered the twilight of their careers. The duo have remained the undisputed choices under Mourinho over the course of the season but the Portuguese is nevertheless said to be eyeing young recruits, who can replace them in the long-run.

The future of French forward Anthony Martial has also been brought into focus in recent weeks but his chances of an exit appear slim unless Mourinho decides to pursue another attacker. Earlier in April, the Portuguese head coach assured that he is content with his forward options and would rather focus on bolstering other areas of the field.
