José Mourinho Ready to Drop Underperforming Players at United

Jose Mourinho claims that he would not be afraid to drop any Manchester United star if it would benefit the team.

The Portuguese has come under intense scrutiny over the last couple of weeks, as United struggle to get any consistency in their results. After an excellent start to his life at Old Trafford, Mourinho has overseen just one league victory in the last five games. His team’s defensive approach in the 0-0 draw with Liverpool on Monday night has drawn even more flak from the critics. Mourinho was always expected to go defensive when it comes to big matches and his staunch supporters would not have been surprised by United’s approach against Liverpool.

However, adopting this approach at a club like Manchester United appears to have been the problem for many including Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher. Mourinho has had to explain a number of aspects about his management in the open over the last couple of weeks. He has now stated that he would not be afraid to drop stars if they do not perform well. This stance is quite contradictory to his previous years, most notably at Chelsea. Mourinho would rarely rest key players like Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, and John Terry. These were names who played in more than 50 games per season under Mourinho.

“No. That was 11 years ago [when Mourinho said some Chelsea players were untouchable], different Premier League, different situation.[Chelsea were] the best team by far, that’s a different story.Nobody is untouchable now. Untouchable in our team I think has to be the spirit, the commitment, the pride, the commitment to the club, the respect to the fans. That has to be untouchable, but not players,” said Mourinho in response to the statements given by him more than a decade ago at Chelsea.
