LINEKER BACKS RASHFORD
Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have expressed hope that Marcus Rashford can rediscover his form after leaving Manchester United on loan. The 27-year-old made his Aston Villa debut in their 2-1 FA Cup fourth-round win over Tottenham Hotspur, following a difficult spell at Old Trafford where he was frozen out under Ruben Amorim.

Rashford had been included in just one matchday squad since mid-December and turned down three lucrative offers from Saudi Pro League clubs before securing his Premier League switch. Despite his struggles, his Villa cameo showed promise, with both Lineker and Shearer optimistic that this move could revive his career.
“I thought Rashford looked lively, he had a couple of good runs, a nice little nutmeg, and he was a threat down that left-hand side,” Lineker said on The Rest is Football podcast. “Hopefully, this is the bolt he needs to get him back playing well because there’s so much talent in there.”
Shearer echoed the sentiment but emphasised that the responsibility lies with Rashford. “It has to be, Gaz. I said it’s like the last chance saloon. He’s been given another opportunity at a football club with a top manager who wants to get the best out of him,” he said. “It’s up to him now. But he made a good start when he came on as a substitute.”
Villa manager Unai Emery also praised Rashford’s impact and hinted at his growing role in the squad. “Marcus Rashford and [Marco] Asensio, we watched their skill and how they helped us. They will help us again in the next months in the different competitions we will face,” he said. “We are in a new way after the changes we did. We are demanding because we still need to improve due to some tactical issues and how we want to compete in the Premier League.”
Rashford’s struggles at United had raised concerns about his long-term future, especially after reports of dressing-room issues and inconsistent performances. A year ago, he was coming off his best-ever season, scoring 30 goals in all competitions, but his form dipped dramatically under Amorim’s tenure. His work rate and attitude were questioned, leading to his omission from key games.
The move to Villa presents a fresh start under a manager who has shown an ability to rejuvenate players. Emery’s track record of improving attacking talents such as Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey could be a significant factor in helping Rashford regain confidence. Villa are pushing for a top-four finish, and the added depth Rashford provides could be crucial in their pursuit of Champions League football.
For now, his focus will be on proving himself again. If his performance against Tottenham is anything to go by, he has the potential to be a valuable asset for Villa. The coming weeks will determine whether he can seize this opportunity and revive his career at the top level.
