MIDFIELDER NEEDED

Manchester United have been on the lookout for a new central midfielder, as manager David Moyes has identified midfielder is one of the key areas to strengthen over the summer. It was one of the weakest positions for the club last season despite their title success.

Star striker Robin van Persie almost single-handedly helped the club in the title last season, but Moyes does not want to be over reliant on the Dutchman in the coming season. Hence, they have been linked with several central midfielders like Marouane Fellaini and Thiago Alcantara in recent weeks.

United recently lost out the race to sign Thiago Alcantara after the 22-year-old Spaniard moved to Bayern Munich to join up with his former manager Guardiola. He is believed to have cost the German club only around £ 21 million. United were believed to be in the race to sign the midfielder, but the player has now revealed that he had no offers from United. The Premier league outfit have made two official offers for former Arsenal man Cesc Fabregas in the last few weeks. Their latest offer of £ 30 million plus a few add-ons has been rejected by Barcelona.

However, Moyes still remains confident that he will be able to get his number one target of the summer.

"Nobody from Manchester United spoke to us. Bayern were always my first option. Did Real Madrid want me? That's my business. During the summer I had a lot of patience, I was waiting and waiting [for Barca to make an offer] but there comes a [stopping] point. I would never close the door on Barca though - the club gave me so much. I wanted to feel valued. I wanted to leave and the club didn't do anything to make me stay," said the 22-year-old.
